We love… Kitchen extensions

When combining areas, it’s very common for homeowners to decide to incorporate the kitchen into an open living space; as the heart of the home.

In the past, houses were built with lots of separate rooms, each with a defined use; kitchen, living room, dining room… However now, the trend for open plan living is on the rise, with one large room which often combines two or more living areas.

When combining areas, it’s very common for homeowners to decide to incorporate the kitchen into an open living space; as the heart of the home, it’s one of the rooms that people naturally gravitate towards – so having a large space which can accommodate this is a real boon. It means that meals can be prepared at the same time as talking to friends, or keeping an eye on children.

There are obvious benefits besides having more space to cook and entertain in; kitchen extensions not only open up floor plans and encourage the integration of everyday living, they family members or friends to be together in the same space whilst doing different things. It also means that with fewer walls there’s more natural light and space, perfect for a welcoming, positive ambience. Open plans areas allow for activity to flow between rooms, and as such decor should be considered; different areas should be apparent, whilst still maintaining common themes. For tips on how to tie decor together in an open plan area see our blog post on Home Accessories.

Creating an open plan living space and kitchen extension doesn’t have to mean totally redesigning your home. By just adding two walls the amount of floor space can be made much bigger, opening up the room and creating more floor space. However, to really get the best of both, and extension such as a garden room is ideal; the kitchen can be relocated into the extension, or redesigned to maximise the new space. Half the fun is in creating an ergonomic space which will work for all the family, so make the most of it!
